Darryl Joseph-Dennie – jazz pianist, neo-soul rhodes monster, gospel organist, music director, and fellow deep diver into the fundamental teachings of Dr. Barry Harris. Flying him in from Toronto, I always aim to build community around constructive opportunities, so we are hosting a PWYC hands-on workshop/masterclass. No minimum or recommendations to increase accessibility. We’d just like to share 🙂
Darryl Joseph-Dennie has played for Jonathan Michel (@ayitibass on IG from NYC, bassist for Terrace Martin and Andrew Cyrille), Elan Trotman (Berklee faculty, saxophone to Michael McDonald and Roberta Flack), running music direction for ANS heralded R&B vocalist Gary Beals, and backing major rapper Desiigner (Panda), Canada’s godfather of hip-hop Maestro, Toronto’s golden era boom bap hero Dan-e-o, and many many more.
We will have 3-6 keyboards and amps supplied to share, hosted on Thursday early evening from 4pm-7:30pm. Topics will include harmony, voice leading and reharmonization in context for contemporary Black music, sound design, gear choices, career paths, and more. We’ll choose some songs to announce on social media that we’ll be discussing but we can go over the changes in the session. We will be bringing in a Rhodes Mark II Stage and maybe a full digital Hammond organ rig for some people to try (no Leslie speaker).
*No prior experience is needed, but recommended for those with foundations in jazz theory and basic piano/keyboard techniques for R&B and hip-hop.
There will be a FREE performance with Darryl on Tuesday, Jan 2 2024 at the Local – 2037 Gottingen from 8pm-late. game.set.trap is playing its final public Halifax performance of trap-jazz.
Trap-jazz: soul jazz renditions of hip-hop, R&B, and trap hit songs, popular music of the time in the footsteps of jazz music. Arrangements take influences from the greats Ahmad Jamal, Oscar, Miles, and Dr. Lonnie as well as contemporary greats such as Braxton Cook, Robert Glasper, Kris Bowers, Joel Ross, and Maurice Brown. Selections include reharmonizations and instrumental reimagining of works by Drake, Kevin Gates, Doja Cat, Kirko Bangz, and many more.
