the people’s kiln

the people’s kiln offers access to firings and training for a manual electric kiln, as well as providing clay and glaze materials needed for making earthenware ceramics.

A MONTHLY COMMUNITY FIRING is typically scheduled for the last sunday of the month; check instagram for regular updates about the next upcoming firing, or sign up for a monthly email update at radstorm-kiln@googlegroups.com.
the kiln is currently fired to cone 06 (1020-25 degrees celsius) to minimize kiln maintenance and support environmental sustainability.
this temperature is suitable for bisque firing all types of clay (ie. earthenware, stoneware or porcelain) and glaze firing of earthenware clay.
I AM INTERESTED IN LEARNING HOW TO FIRE THE KILN.
please reach out if you are interested in assisting with the firings and learning how to fire a manual electric kiln. you do not need any experience. this is an opportunity to check out a kiln firing and learn the skills to fire a kiln independently : )

I WANT TO WORK WITH CLAY.
as covid-19 protocol, we are currently asking for individuals to make their pieces at home and drop them off to be fired. clay needs to be dry to be fired, so please only drop off dry work. leave the work on the storage shelf next to the kiln.
WHEN CAN I ACCESS THE KILN ROOM?
the space is accessible during open hours on sundays.
the kiln room is located downstairs, in the basement.

ARE THERE CERAMIC MATERIALS AVAILABLE FOR USE?
earthenware clay is sold by the pound ($1/lb) when available.  bring your own bag or container to store the clay, so it does not dry out.
NEW ! underglazes are now available for purchase, in various colours and sizes. these are great for decorating your work and can be applied to leather-hard, bone dry or bisque fired pieces. please inquire for details if you are interested.
a clear glaze is available for use during open hours. work should be bisque fired before applying the clear glaze.
